The financial management of fundraising takes place in the context of financial planning and management for the whole organization and the development professional therefore needs to understand this process and how it relates to fundraising. This course therefore reviews some basic accounting terms that relate to assessing the organization’s net worth and its net income.
An important part of financial management is the management of cash flows within an organization so this course explores strategies for successful cash flow management.
A key part of the strategic planning process is the formation of a realistic budget, both for the organization as a whole and for the development department and the budgeting process is examined in detail.

Another important element that is discussed is the system of internal controls to be established for all transactions within the organization. The final stage in financial stewardship is reporting on the financial progress of the organization and its fundraising activities and the course provides details of financial reporting in terms of internal and external audiences, the legal requirements for reporting, and the presentation of financial statements.

The course also looks at, what for fundraisers in the organization is one of the most important reports that interest internal and external audience, the cost of fundraising.
